Local Attractions
The Elora Gorge is several kilometres of 80-foot cliffs, caverns, rapids and quiet pools. During the summer, hiking along the cliffs and inner-tubing through the gorge are popular activities. Hiking trails begin right at the Elora Mill. During the winter months cross country skiing and scenic winter walks are popular. Inner tube rentals are available from the Elora Gorge Conservation Area. The Grand River also provides excellent fly-fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
The Elora-Cataract trail traverses 47 kilometres of scenic countryside. Along the trail, between Fergus and Elora is the Elora Quarry Conservation Area, an abandoned quarry that is a favourite spot for a refreshing dip.
The countryside surrounding Elora is lovely. You can visit Ontario's last remaining covered bridge at West Montrose, tour through Old Order Mennonite farm country, and visit many local museums or local gallaries such as The Styll Gallery.
Visitors often plan their stay around one of our special happenings:
- The Elora Festival is a month long (weekends only) musical extravaganza held each summer. Performances of internationally-acclaimed musicians and singers take place in a number of unusual venues.
- The Drayton Festival and Schoolhouse Theatre in St. Jacobs feature outstanding performances by Canadian Talent from spring to fall, and are located only 25 minutes from the Elora Mill.
- The Fergus Scottish Festival (Highland Games) in early August draws competitors and enthusiastic crowds from around the world. First-rate performances and competitions are held in Highland dance, traditional athletics as well as pipe and drum bands.
- Other community events include: the Elora Antique Show and the Elora Arts Council Studio Tour.
Additional information can be obtained for any of the community events from the Centre Wellington (Elora/Fergus) Chamber of Commerce at (519) 846-9841, www.ferguselora.com or www.elora.info.
